Portugal
An Affordable European Treasure
Portugal is famous for its beaches, food and Fado….but that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
I've been interested in Portugal ever since I heard Mariza sing Fado on David Letterman. Fado ("fate, destiny") music originated in Portugal around 1820 and is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics about longing, poverty, and the sea.

Portugal has a rich history going back to 298 AD. You can still find Roman ruins, walled cities, and castles on every hilltop. Lisbon is the capitol and largest city with many historic neighborhoods ("barrios"). We're staying in the oldest one - Alfama.
The Algarve in southern Portugal is the most popular tourist destination in Portugal and one of the most popular vacation spots among Europeans. Very close to Africa, influenced by the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, it enjoys one of the most stable climates in the world, 65 to 90 degrees year round. In September, we're anticipating 80+ degrees on the beach.
Kizomba is the dance I will attempt in Portugal. It originated in Angola, Africa, but is often danced to Portuguese music. Until 1975 Angola was a territory of Portugal. I'm pretty sure my video won't look anything like this. (Probably won't find a partner with a "man-bun".) My only hope is that my past bellydance lessons might help. Wish me luck.
Isabelle and Felicien, two of the best Kizomba dancers in the world!
If you have any suggestions for my trip, please share them with me. Thank you so much!
